Rope Halters Vs. Webbed/buckle Halters?

I use a rope halter because it gives me more control over my horse when I am leading her. What does everyone else use?

Rope Halters Vs. Webbed/buckle Halters?
I only use rope halters...and I'm not talking about the cheaper $15.00 ones. My experience with the cheaper rope halters is that they will stretch if your horse spooks and their head will slip out. And yes these were thin ones but my horse didn't care. The rope halters I'm using now are great! They are made of a more durable rope I think this rope is used for boats. Anyways I got them at Jeffers.com . One of them was just tested the other day and it held up great. It didn't stretch and my horse gave up after 3 yanks.
Reply:I have both. Depends on the horse for which one I use. If the horse doesn't lead well or pay attention to me when leading, I will use a knotted rope halter on them %26amp; do exercises to train them better. All mine currently lead very well, so I can just use the regular nylon halters on them with no problems.
Reply:The horses I handle generally have nylon halters, because we use cross-ties at the stable and rope halters are a pain for that and because they all lead very well. I've only used a rope halter on one horse, because apparently without it he doesn't lead well, and he was an angel for me with it on so I guess it works. Generally I just say use whatever works for your horse, but don't preach about it to others 'cause it might not work for them.
Reply:nylon
Reply:I also use rope halters the thinner the better. it putts pressure on the horse where it is needed, but it must fit correct.
Reply:Both. Rope halters for horses that need "pay attention" lessons, web for horses that already listen very well.
Reply:i usually us nylon. but rope halters are very effective.
Reply:On my own horses, I use a rope halter or a headcollar or my belt or a bit of long grass pulled from the hedge, whichever is nearest to hand. On other peoples horses I would always prefer a rope halter.
Reply:I use rope. The nylon ones just dulled my mules cues on the ground.

I have attentiveness and response with the ropes.
Reply:I use nylon on my QH but on my ARAB i am gonna use a rope halter.

The reason (truthfully) is my QH's head is bigger so a wider strap looks better.

The Arab (truthfully) has a small dished head so the skinny strap looks good!

i feel i have the same control with both but on the leadropes i use a snap lead but when i need more control i use one with a chain around the nose.
Reply:I use just a standard halter unless i doing ground work then i use a rope halter, since the knots hit pressure points i dont want my babies to think they are doing something wrong when they are just trying to relax (if the pressure hits them right).
Reply:i use rope halters, i actually make my own. i like them alot because they seem to have just enough for lack of a better word "bite" to them that it gets the horses attention and seem i have better control over my horse with them. however i do use normal nylon/leather halters for my more "quite" horses, but rope halters are my fav.
Reply:I think rope halters are more suited for horses in training since they apply more pressure on the nose then a regular Nylon halter would but if you can control your horse better using a rope halter then keep uising one also some people use a stud chain with a normal halter for control also which goes around the noseband for added pressure.
Reply:I have never used anything but nylon halters but i was thinking about trying a rope one on our mare ( who does'nt have good ground manners). After hearing everybodys comments on rope halters I'm convinced to buy one and try it.
Reply:I prefer leather halters, personally. I just like the way they look.

I've used rope halters and nylon halters too though. Rope halters are great, but I always cross-tie so they're impractical for me. And nylon... eh, fun if you want a certain color, but I just think leather looks classier. I had a nicely made (but not much more expensive than nylon) leather halter for years and barely ever cleaned it, it got used every day and was wonderful. Plus if you ever need to turn a horse out in a halter for whatever reason... nylon and rope aren't safe for that, but leather is.
Reply:i actually use both:) I have rope halters hanging in the tack room for everyday catching and leading and a fe win my truck as emergancy halters...ie the hors egets out....etc. I use the others for cross tieing and shipping. Mainly b/c the snaps on the side. I do like rope halter b/c they can get a horses attention a little quicker and can be easy on the horse at the same time. If you look at a pic of my appy you will see what a normal halter did to him due to his former owner's neglect. I NEVER leave a halter on an unsupervised horse that is untied. I try hard not to leave a horse tied and unsupervised but sometimes it's a neccessary evil to do so. but in my opinion, both are good
